An article 

An article (abbreviated as ART) is a word used with a noun to identify the reference of a noun phrase. It is also known as a determiner because it defines, modified, and quantified noun phrases.

1. Definite article “the”

The Definite article Used for particular nouns phrase may be something that the speaker has already specified.

The usage of the Definite article “the” is given below in the following rules.

Rule #1

Use a definite article (the) to talk about a specific person or object known by your listener or entity that has already been mentioned or identified by a listener.

For example,

I planted two cherries in my garden last year. The Cherry has now grown big. (The listener knows the cherry tree)

• I have found a solution to the question.

(The listener does not know the solution, but the listener knows the question.)

Can you open the door? (The listener and speaker know the door.)

Rule #2

Use Definite article (the) to refer to a particular date: Roy was born on the 15th of May.

 2. Indefinite articles “A” and “An.”

The indefinite article is used for more general or unspecified ideas, which do not refer to a specific group or class.

Rule #1

Use indefinite article (a) before nouns that begin with a consonant sound (non-vowel). Use indefinite article (an) before nouns that start with a vowel or vowel sound.

For example

Consonant: a cat, a dog, a boy, a girl, a house, a tree, etc.

Non-consonant: an apple, an engineer, an ice-cream, an older man, an umbrella, etc.

Rule #2

Use indefinite articles (a or an) only with countable nouns that can be count.

Countable nouns: an elephant, a car, a teacher, an onion, an exciting story, a university, an hour, etc.

Uncountable nouns: water, salt, sugar, love, anger, weakness, beauty, knowledge, darkness, etc.

Rule #3

Use indefinite articles (a or an) to talk about things or objects unknown to your listener. 

For example

I bought a bike last year. (Bike is unknown to the listener)

Rule #4

Use indefinite article (a or an) with adjectives

For example

Leaving my house was a wrong decision.

 Roy is a handsome boy

Rule #5

Use indefinite articles (a or an) to talk about unspecified persons or objects.

For example

Do you have a pen? (Unspecific pen)

Do you have the pen that Jim gave you? (Specific pen)

Rule #6

Use indefinite articles  (a or an) to illustrate the category or type of a person or object.

In each sentence, placed a or a where essential.

For example

• My bike is a 2021 model.
• Jim’s laptop is the 5th generation.
• Roy is a teacher.

How to use an article in your writing

• First, look at your noun. Is it countable or uncountable?

Example: “I want to illustrate a cat. ‘Cat’ is a countable noun.”

•  Step two,

Are you talking about a particular noun or general?

Example: Yes, I am talking about a specific cat, such as the blue cat.

•  Step three,

If you are illustrating a specific noun, use the definite article. If you are more uncertain, use the indefinite article.

Example: “I have a black cat. The cat

chased the grey mouse.”

Some exceptions

Some uncountable nouns can take the indefinite article.

• If you don’t mind, give me water. (water is an uncountable noun)
• If you don’t mind, give me a glass of water (a glass of water is countable)
• If the name of a location is described and contains a countable noun, use the definite article.

Examples: The United States of America, The University of New York, The Writing Center, etc.

For example

• I like to play basketball (incorrect)
• I like to play basketball. (correct)
• My sister was always good at physics. (incorrect)
• My sister was always good at physics. (correct)

When we do not use articles

We don’t use indefinite articles (a or an) in front of plurals or uncountable nouns, such as teachers, students, cats, etc.

We don’t use indefinite articles (a or an) with liquids, sand, dirt, happiness, harmony, sadness, justice, etc.

However, use them with abstract and concrete nouns to specify them.

The brown dirt, the cold water, etc.

We don’t use articles with Names, pronouns, and proper nouns.

New York, Japan, Australia, Mumbai, Lahore, etc.
